Video Conferencing

Live video link using the latest technology

The Deep

The CLC has used Video Conferencing technologies to carry out a number of exciting projects with Hull schools and beyond.

Every week, a Primary School has been given the opportunity to take part in a live videoconferencing link with one of the guides at the Deep Submarium in Hull, who then hosts a question and answer session with the children. Teachers and children alike have found this to be a stimulating and exciting experience. The Deep staff have also enjoyed the sessions, as some of the questions the children have asked have been surprisingly challenging!

We have run the sessions with most year groups, from early years to year 6. Some special schools have also taken part, and found it to be a useful and rewarding experience.

We have run similar sessions with the Jorvik Centre in York (talking to a big, hairy Viking!), the Natural History Museum (Dino Dan the fossil hunter), and we are in the process of setting up sessions with the Met Office on topics such as climate change and weather around the world. If you are interested in any of the sessions, contact Dave Langcaster on 01482 616576 or by e-mail via .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Another way we have used Video Conferencing is to link schools together. These do not have to be in Hull - we have linked Hull schools with schools as far afield as Bradford, North Duffield, Driffield, Leeds and Rotherham. We are always looking for new ways to use VC, so if you think it is something you can make use of to deliver any project, contact Dave Langcaster using the details above.

Thank you for setting up our video conference with the Deep today.  The children really enjoyed themselves.  The FS2 children are currently making their own fish and it has become a talking point for the whole day.  This went very smoothly and we look forward to giving other classes the same opportunity the experience later in the summer.

Thank you for visiting our school and setting up the video conferencing for our children to take part in.  The experience was lovely for the year 3 children.  It was challenging and surprising just how many fish questions can be fitted in tothe time allocated.  We look forward very much to another 2 classes having the opportunity to take part in this experience.

The video conferencing is an excellent project which we found to be very worthwhile.  Dave set the equipment up for us and we managed to involve a lot of children in the video conference. The session was enjoyed so much that we have had to squeeze a mini ‘Under The Sea’ theme into our year so that the children could explore this further.

The children in Key Stage 1 really enjoyed their video conferencing session with the deep.It was a lovely experience for them ,many of whom had never been to the deep. Both the year 1 and 2 children asked a good range of questions and were genuinely interested in everything they saw. It also inspired some good follow up work. Thank you.

Our year 2 children thoroughly enjoyed their conference with the Deep as part of our Deep Blue Sea project this term and are looking forward to a class trip to the Deep later in the term.  The link was set up very quickly and the conference went smoothly; the children particularly enjoyed seeing themselves as well as the big tank on the screen!  The person who answered the questions was very knowledgable and had a good rapport with the children.  I am aware it was his first time but it would have been nice to have a short introduction rather than launching straight into the children’s questions.

Thank you for giving our Y5/6 children such an educational and exciting experience! They thoroughly enjoyed asking questions to Sarah. She gave interesting answers and had a great rapport with the children. The children could see the main tank and it was like actually being at the Deep. Thanks again! And A HUGE THANK YOU from the Y5/6 children!

Biggin Hill Primary School, helped by Hull CLC, set up a link with Westbourne Primary School in Bradford. This helped both schools fulfil their requirements for Community Cohesion, and also helped to develop the pupils’ speaking and listening skills.
The children and staff would like to thank Dave Langcaster very much for his involvement, patience and hard work in setting up the video conference. This became a challenging project due to incompatible equipment, but thanks to Dave’s experience and determination we managed two sessions in the same morning with our year 3 pupils and a year 5 class. Many, many thanks for making this happen for us. The feedback from Bradford was very positive.
