I used one of these cameras when I was doing some work in a primary school. The CLC had only just taken delivery of them and I thought that as it would be good to see how easy they were to use and how some children got on with them.
I showed the Y5/6 pupils the camera and how to operate it- all of 2 minutes. They then worked in pairs/threes to record a few seconds of video to record what they had learned during the morning.
The camera is very easy to operate and with a built in USB stick, transferring the videos to the network was simplicity itself. No need to scurry round for cables, card readers etc. The quality is very good and the camera coped well with indoor lighting. Sound was perfectly reasonable for a built in microphone.
The camera also comes with its own simple video editing program, so if you don’t have access to DVE software, then once plugged in, the software on the camera performs a one off installation and you edit your footage on the camera. OK, it’s not very sophisticated, but it’s fine for basic editing. I’d still prefer to edit in something like Logotron’s Revelation Sight and Sound, or Windows Movie Maker (with pupils- not just me), but it’s a bonus to have something with the camera. Just one technical warning: I tried the software on school network and the privileges wouldn’t allow it to run, but it was fine on a laptop. Might be one for the network manager to look at.

We borrowed these cameras for use with our year two children and they were simple enough for the children to operate themselves.  We were so impressed with them we bought our own set.
