Flashmasters
Flashmasters provide a fun way of engaging pupils in improving their mental maths.
There are 9 Levels for each of the 4 rules of number and the pupils can set their own time limits to provide the answer to questions, or can set a time to see how many they can answer in a given time span.
The Flashmaster keeps a record of the last 15 tests taken, so the pupils can ‘beat their best score’ without having to compete against others.

Flashmasters come in boxes of 24 and are loaned out in whole boxes only. As they have been so well received by schools and many have requested to extend the loan, this year we are adopting a different approach for these items. The CLC is willing to meet 50% of the cost of the Flashmasters for a 3 year loan. At the end of the loan period, the CLC will write the Flasmasters off the asset register as a depreciated asset and they will remain with the school. The bulk purchase price of the flashmasters is £30, so a box of 24 would cost the school £360 for the loan period.
Schools who already have Flashmasters on loan, due back July 2010, can also opt to keep their loan stock on the same basis.

We have been using flashmasters at our school throughout most of KS2 with great success. They are a great way of engaging all children in times tables as they see them as a gadget and therefore fun. The children are also able to access them at their own level enabling the more and less able to participate in activities using them equally. I also find that once times tables are becoming secure using them to discern division calculations to be very valuable and a quick and easy to assess how secure the children’s times tables are. All this and you can also appeal to (boys generally) children’s sense of competition which is a huge motivator too!

We’ve had some of these on loan for a while and use them for quick mental maths challenges. They are very functional and easy to use.
